Your grandson calls in tears, but is it really him?

Late at night, you get this call. The voice sounds exactly like your grandson Dayo.

Incoming call

Private number

The caller says:

“Grandma, it’s me, Dayo. I’m in trouble. Please don’t tell Mummy.”

“I hit someone with the car. The police will lock me up unless I pay ₦300,000 tonight. Here, talk to the officer.”

What would you do?

Send the money. It is definitely his voice

Not safe. Computers can now copy a voice from a short video online. Sounding like Dayo is no longer proof.

Ask for your family code word. Then end the call and call Dayo on his usual number

Safe choice. Correct. A real Dayo will know the word and will answer his own phone. A scammer can do neither.

Talk to the “officer” to find out more

Not safe. The “officer” is part of the scam. They will add pressure and give you an account to pay into.

Remember this

Golden rule

A familiar voice is not proof. Use your family code word, or call back on their usual number.
