Lesson 2

Your codes and PINs

What an OTP, PIN, password and BVN are, and the one rule that keeps your money safe.

Your secret keys

Your money is protected by a few secret numbers and words. Here is what each one is.

  • PIN: a short number, often 4 digits. You use it at the ATM, with your card, or in your bank app.
  • Password: a secret word you use to open your bank app or your email.
  • OTP: this means “one-time password”. It is a short code your bank sends you by text message, often 6 numbers. It works only once, for a few minutes.
  • BVN: your Bank Verification Number. It is 11 digits that link you to all your bank accounts.

The OTP is the key to your house

Your OTP is like the key to your house. Nobody needs it except you.

If you give it to someone, you have opened your door for them.

When someone asks for your OTP, they are already trying to move your money. The code is the last step they need.

ZentraBank Text message

Your OTP is 482913. It expires in 5 minutes. Do not share this code with anyone. Zentra Bank staff will never ask for it.

11:05 am
A real OTP message. Even the bank tells you not to share it.

The one rule

Never tell anyone your PIN, password or OTP.

Not on the phone. Not by text. Not on WhatsApp. Not to a bank worker, a police officer or a friend.

Your bank will never ask for them, not even to “fix” or “unblock” your account.

Keep your BVN private too. It is not a password, but scammers use it to sound like your bank. A caller who knows your BVN is not proof they are from the bank.

At the ATM or POS

When you type your PIN, cover the keypad with your other hand.

Do not let anyone “help” you, even if they are friendly or wear a uniform.

If your card gets stuck, stay calm. Call your bank on the number on the back of your card. Do not use a number someone gives you or a number stuck on the machine.

Remember

  • Your PIN, password and OTP are for you alone. Never share them with anyone.
  • Your bank will never ask for them, not even to “unblock” your account.
  • Cover the keypad when you type your PIN, and don’t accept help from strangers at the ATM.
